A standard bath mat is 20 × 30 inches, and the sizes run from 17 × 24 for a small mat up to 27 × 45 for a large one. Bathroom rugs are sold in inches rather than feet, which is the first thing that catches people out.

Bath mats are sized in inches because they are sold as textiles rather than as rugs. Sizes vary more between makers here than in area rugs, so check the label.
Size to the fixture, not the floor. A bath mat is there to catch water where you step out, so it is sized against the tub, shower or vanity in front of it — not against the room.
Match the mat to the tub. A standard 60 in tub takes a 20 × 30 or 24 × 36 mat laid along it. A mat much shorter than the tub leaves wet floor at one end, which is exactly where people slip.
Vanity runners. A double vanity is usually 60 to 72 in wide and wants a runner, not a mat: 24 × 60 or 30 × 72. One small mat in front of a double vanity always looks lost.
Check the door clearance. Bathroom doors sit low and bath mats are thick. Measure the gap under the door against the pile before buying, or the door will drag.
Backing matters more than size. A bathroom rug without a non-slip backing on a tiled floor is a hazard whatever size it is. If the rug you want has no backing, put a non-slip pad under it.
