Bedding Size Chart: Sheets, Duvets and Comforters

Calculator + chartEnter your measurements below and it works the answer out.

Bedding is sold by bed name, but the pieces are not the same size. A queen fitted sheet is 60 × 80 in and the queen comforter over it is 88 × 96 in. Here is what every piece measures, and the pocket depth your mattress actually needs.

Bedding is not standardized the way mattresses are. Mattress dimensions are fixed, but sheet and comforter cuts vary between manufacturers, so these are the common US retail ranges — check the size on the packaging of the set you are buying. The fitted sheet is the only piece cut to the mattress; everything else is deliberately larger so it can tuck or hang.

How this was worked out

Sheet and duvet dimensions are the common US retail sizes. They are not a legal standard, so brands differ slightly — the figures here are the middle of the range you will actually find in shops.

Pocket depth is the number that goes wrong. A fitted sheet has to cover the mattress top, wrap the sides and tuck underneath. Standard fitted sheets fit mattresses up to about 14 inches; deep-pocket up to 18; extra-deep up to 22.

The calculator adds your mattress height to the check and tells you which pocket depth to buy. If you use a mattress topper, measure with the topper on — that is the height the sheet has to cover.

One rule worth knowing: a flat sheet is always wider than the mattress by roughly the mattress height on each side plus a tuck. That is why a Queen flat sheet is 90 inches wide for a 60-inch mattress.

Sources. Mattress dimensions are confirmed against Sleep Foundation — Mattress Sizes and Dimensions. Sheet and comforter sizes have no published standard — cuts vary between manufacturers — so the figures here are ranges covering the common US retail sizes, and the page says so rather than presenting one number as fact. Common questions

Do Twin and Twin XL sheets fit each other?

No. A Twin XL is 5 inches longer, so a Twin fitted sheet will not stretch over it, and a Twin XL sheet on a Twin will be loose at the corners. The flat sheets are closer but a Twin flat sheet is 6 inches shorter.

Can I use King sheets on a California King?

The flat sheet and pillowcases yes, the fitted sheet no. A King is 76 × 80 and a California King is 72 × 84 — a King fitted sheet is 4 inches too wide and 4 inches too short, and will pop off the corners.

What pocket depth do I need?

Measure your mattress from the bottom seam to the top, including any topper. Up to 14 inches takes a standard fitted sheet, 15 to 18 needs deep-pocket, and over 18 needs extra-deep. Pillow-top and hybrid mattresses are usually the ones that need deep.

Is a duvet the same size as a comforter?

Close but not identical. A comforter is usually slightly wider because it is designed to drape over the sides of the bed; a duvet is sized to its cover. Buy the cover to match the duvet insert, not the mattress.

Why is my Queen duvet too small?

Queen duvets range from 88 to 92 inches wide across brands, and a taller mattress eats the overhang. If you want the duvet to reach the bed frame on both sides, size up to King — it is the most common fix and the reason many people with Queen beds buy King bedding.
