Older homes (pre-1970) often have 78 in doors and odd widths; measure the slab before ordering.
Door sizes are quoted as width × height of the slab, in inches, and written as feet-inches in the trade: a 2/8 door is 2 ft 8 in (32 in) wide; a 6/8 door is 80 in tall. The slab is what you buy; the frame around it is the jamb, and the hole in the wall is the rough opening.
The rough opening is the slab width plus 2 inches (for the jamb and shims) and the slab height plus 2½ inches, measured from the subfloor. Pre-hung doors come with the jamb; you size the rough opening to them.
Measuring an existing door: width across the slab at the middle, height from top to bottom edge, thickness at the edge. Then the jamb depth — the wall thickness the frame sits in, 4⅝ in for a 2×4 wall with drywall, 6⅝ in for a 2×6 wall.
80 inches tall and 30 or 32 inches wide for a bedroom; 28 inches for a small bathroom; 24 inches for a closet. Thickness is 1⅜ inches.
36 inches wide by 80 inches tall, 1¾ inches thick. Tall entries use 96-inch doors.
34 inches wide by 82½ inches tall, for a pre-hung door with a standard jamb.
Interior doors are 1⅜ inches; exterior doors are 1¾ inches.
