Width and height are the panel itself on a 16:9 screen — bezels and a stand add roughly an inch. The near end of the distance range is the cinema figure, the far end is the balanced one; both come from the same rule below.
The whole thing is one number: viewing angle. A screen is the right size when it fills a sensible slice of your vision. The film industry works to two figures — SMPTE recommends about 30 degrees for general viewing, THX about 40 degrees for a cinema feel. Everything on this page is those two angles turned into inches.
The rule. On a 16:9 screen, a 30-degree angle puts you at 1.6 × the diagonal away, and a 40-degree angle at 1.2 × the diagonal. Read backwards, that is the size you should buy: diagonal = distance ÷ 1.6 for balanced viewing, diagonal = distance ÷ 1.2 for movies. Sit 9 ft (108 in) away and that is a 68 in screen for balanced, 90 in for cinema — so a 65 or a 75 in real money.
Why 4K changed the answer. The old "sit three times the diagonal away" advice existed because 1080p pixels became visible up close. At 4K the pixels disappear at about 1.0 × the diagonal, so the limit is no longer resolution — it is your neck. That is why the modern range starts at 1.2 and not at 2.5, and why the size most rooms should buy is bigger than it was ten years ago.
Dimensions. A 16:9 panel is 0.8716 × the diagonal wide and 0.4903 × the diagonal tall. Those two constants generate every width and height in the table above, and the calculator uses the same ones, so the chart and the tool cannot drift apart.
Mount height. The center of the screen belongs at seated eye level — about 42 in from the floor on a normal sofa. Subtract half the screen height and you have the bottom edge. On a 65 in screen that is 42 − 16 = 26 in, which is why 24 to 30 in is the usual media console height. Mounting above a fireplace pushes the center to 55 in or more and is the most common reason a new TV is uncomfortable to watch.
Almost certainly not. A 65 in screen wants a seat 6.5 to 8.7 ft away, which is an ordinary sofa-to-wall distance in a 12 ft room. The size that goes wrong in small rooms is usually the one bought too small — people picture the screen against the wall rather than against their field of view.
Between 5.5 and 7.3 ft. Closer than 5.5 ft and you are turning your head to follow the edges of the picture; further than 7.3 ft and the screen stops filling enough of your vision for the detail in a 4K picture to register.
Narrower. The panel should sit inside the console's footprint, so a 65 in TV (56.7 in wide) needs a console of at least 57 in and looks best on 60 to 65 in. A screen overhanging its stand looks unstable and, on a stand-mounted set, often is.
The rule does not change, but the mount height does. Propped up in bed your eyes sit around 48 in from the floor rather than 42, so the whole screen moves up about six inches. Bedroom viewing distances are usually shorter, which is why 43 to 55 in is the common bedroom range.
It does not change the answer. The limits here are the viewing angle and your neck, not the pixel count — 8K only removes a resolution ceiling that 4K had already pushed past normal seating distances.
Yes, and most people who do are happy, up to a point. Past roughly 1.0 × the diagonal you are inside the cinema figure and start moving your eyes across the screen to read subtitles or follow a ball. That is the point where bigger stops being better.
